If you have ever visited a facility that had a NASA Murcury, Gemini or Apollo spacecraft they are typically encased in acrylic. This is to prevent damage due to dust or people touching them. We were at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum today and they were doing some work in there. Because of that work they had the Gemini IV capsule on a temp stand without it's plastic cover. This spacecraft was the one from which Ed White made the first US spacewalk.

Gemini accomplished many of the milestones needed to get people on the moon. First spacewalk, rendezvous, tracking of multiple spacecraft and long duration flight. It did all that in two years. It is one of my favorites. Sorry about the phone pics. We weren't planning on being in DC today.

It's so strange seeing just the capsule without the big white back section. Strange but cool.

No. Too many eyeballs and it is right by security at the main entrance. I did touch the Apollo 15 command module at the USAF museum years ago!

Yeah they get touchy about being touchy. I almost touched part pf the Arrow and they were not happy. The other flyable aircraft however seemed to be fair game however....
